My NCAA Football Letter - Bowl Games SpecialDecember 25, 2009First, Happy Holidays! Second, there has been some talk about the Big 10 looking for a 12th school. Could it be Rutgers? Bowl Games to watch: St. Petersburg Bowl (12/19): Rutgers vs. UCF – How the heck did Rutgers win like that? Go New Jersey! Maaco Las Vegas Bowl (12/22): Oregon State vs. BYU –I feel sorry for BYU for this horrendous rip-off. As expected, not very close. Champs Sports Bowl (12/29): Wisconsin vs. Miami – I hate to say it, but I think Miami will win this game. Insight Bowl (12/31): Minnesota vs. Iowa State – Big ten win! Outback Bowl (1/1): Northwestern vs. Auburn – Ugh. A mediocre SEC team vs. a mediocre Big Ten team. Unfortunately, I do not expect a Big Ten win from this one. Capitol One Bowl (1/1): PSU vs. LSU – This game should be called the “How the heck did we end up here? Bowl”. Both teams made HUGE blunders during the regular season (PSU only losing at home and LSU losing their nice lead on Bama in the second half). This could turn out to be quite a good game if the Mr. Clark decides to play. Another interesting fact, LSU’s O-line is not very good and PSU has had 34 sacks this season. That combination might allow PSU’s defense to win the game. Kinoca Minolta Gator Bowl (1/1): WV vs. FSU – One question, how the heck does FSU get to play in 2010? TARP Rose Bowl (1/1): OSU vs. Oregon – Even though it would be nice for OSU to win a big bowl game, they won’t. I have a feeling Oregon will not only win, but win by more than two scores. Allstate Sugar Bowl (1/1): Cincy vs. FL – Tebow University should win. Valero Alamo Bowl (1/2): MSU vs. Texas Tech – Depending on which MSU shows up, the Big Ten may be able to win this. Tostitos Fiesta Bowl (1/4): Boise State vs. TCU – Clash of the “Division II” unbeatens. Both of these teams really need to change conferences. FedEx Orange Bowl (1/5): Iowa vs. GT – You know what, I really do think Iowa has chance. TARP BCS National Championship Game (1/7): Alabama vs. Texas - This is probably going to be one of the best National Championship games since Texas/USC. Colt McCoy had a fluke game in the Big 12 Championship and he will not make that mistake again. He is an NFL style and ready QB and will be playing more like Peyton and less like Eli. Ingram is an exciting and dynamic RB and Texas will have a tough time stopping him. Either way, I predicting a Bama win in the offensive powerhouse struggle. In fact, I’m hoping the defenses can’t keep up and we have a high scoring game. Looking forward to it.

My NCAA Football Letter - Week 12November 20, 2009Week 11 Recap:
|
My NCAA Football Letter - Week 11November 13, 2009Week 10 recap: That was the second worst game I ever personally witnessed at Beaver Stadium. (The first was when Penn State played Miami in 2001.) I felt like Morelli was our QB again. What the heck happened to the #17 that had so much confidence this season? Unfortunately, Iowa lost too. Week 11: This week’s game to watch will be a short list because as Penn State fans we do not care too much about the national scene after last week. IU@(18)PSU: Go State, beat the Hoosiers! UM@(20)WI: See below. (10)Iowa@(11)OSU: Well, depending on what happened last week would decide who we root for this week. Stanzi the 4th quarter comeback kid is out. James Vandenberg will be starting in his first game in a league defining matchup. Even though we all know what the possibilities are, here is the breakdown.
In any event, I really want Iowa to beat OSU. OSU horrendously represents the Big Ten in bowl games and I would really like to see pretty much any other team play in the Rose Bowl. So with Iowa being the only non-OSU team that can represent us this season, I am rooting for them this weekend. Go Hawkeyes! (16)Utah@(4)TCU: I cannot ignore this one. LT’s alma mater is playing its last difficult game of their season. If Texas slips up before the end of the season then TCU may very well be playing in the Title game against either FL or Bama. We Are!

My NCAA Football Letter - Week 10November 6, 2009Week 9 Recap: I wonder if the refs for the IU-Iowa games will be eligible for the Dick Butkus award for literally taking 2 touchdowns off the scoreboard. Texas is obviously not a joke and clearly the best team in the Big 12 with that resounding win over the Cowboys. Unless something really wacky happens, we are looking at an SEC-Big12 championship. This is good news for us because that means the Orange and Fiesta bowls will get open picks and a one-loss Big Ten team tends to be a desirable choice for those games. Finally, let’s hear it for Oregon. The winner of the Big Ten will be playing the Ducks in the Rose Bowl if they keep playing like that. Week 10: It’s November! The Big Ten champ will be crowned this month. There’s an OSU quote (I know, blasphemous) that I really enjoy: “September is for pretenders and November is for the contenders.” Games to watch: NW@(4)Iowa: The Wildcats had a great first half against PSU last week and then Clark found his receivers and our defense started to act like Linebacker U. I do believe that PSU would still win, but I think the score would have been closer is NW QB Kafka played the full game. The DL is out for this game and Kafka is not on it, so let’s see what he can do against the 4th Quarter comeback-kids. (9)LSU@(3)AL: If Bama wins, then they will probably take over the 2 spot and they will play FL in the SEC championship. LSU will not rise to 2 if they win, but then they will play FL in the SEC Championship. Either way, this is mostly an SEC West championship game to see who plays FL and ultimately represents the SEC in the Title Game. Huge national title implications with this game. (8)OR@Standford: It’s not that I think The Cardinal (yes, it is singular) will win, but as Big Ten fans, we should be mindful of the likely opponent in the Rose Bowl. A Big Ten team has not won the Rose Bowl since Wisconsin in 2000. That was 10 seasons ago! (16)OSU@(11)PSU: This one is huge! If any team has hopes of taking or tying the Big Ten crown, they must win this game. Both are 1-loss highly desirable teams. Even if Iowa wins out and goes to the Rose Bowl, the winner of this game will almost surely be going to a BCS bowl game. There a few key points to this game:
WE ARE PENN STATE!!! We Are!

My NCAA Football Letter - Week 8October 23, 2009Week 7 Recap:
|
My NCAA Football Letter - Week 6October 09, 2009Week 5 recap: It was a fairly boring weekened outside of MSU beating UM, VT not blowing away Duke, and a really exciting Miami game, which may be their last until the final conference game against USF. Slight correction about a comment I made last week: VT needs to lose 2 games for Miami to get to a BCS bowl game, and if they keep playing like they did against Duke, that may happen. How can Penn State win the Big Ten: If this happens, PSU is the only 1 loss team in Big Ten and we get to play the intriguing non-obvious winner of the Pac-10. As the season progresses, and my points do or do not happen, then the formula will change. As of right now, this if the *most likely* scenario, but this is college football. Heck, Iowa could lose to MSU in East Lansing. Week 6: Did anyone else see the Nebraska/Mizzou game last night? The Tigers went into the 4th quarter winning 12-0 and LOST 27-12. You read that correctly. Nebraska scored 27 points in just the 4th quarter. Another exciting fact about the game; there was a total of 20 penalties for 208 yards. 2 full fields of penalties! Games to watch: Eastern Illinois@(14)PSU: On because it is PSU. (3)Bama@(20)OleMiss: Big game for both teams. Ole Miss has 1 loss to the Gamecocks but being in the SEC, 1 loss is not a big deal. Bama is their first of 3 challenges this season. Bama needs to not only win, but to win big, proving that they belong at 3, where they will remain if they win (see FL/LSU for reason). I am expecting a good game in the beginning, but Bama should pull away second half. WI@(9)OSU: In case you did not know, the unranked Badgers are 5-0. They are not ranked because they have sloppily won those games against iffy teams. OSU is the first real game in their schedule and boy is it a tough one. As I stated above, I will be rooting for WI but I do not expect them to win. (1)FL@(4LSU): If Florida wins this game, I am predicting they win the national championship. However, with that said, I do not think they win tonight. LSU is going to win this game at home. The insane 12th man will help, but the real factor is the concept of team. Here's a quick test: Name more than one player on FL. Now name any player on LSU. I firmly believe the team will win. Finally, to finish a point I made in the Bama game, if LSU wins, they will swap rankings with FL. If FL wins, LSU will drop only a few spots. That's it for this week. We Are!

The Daily Iowan praises Penn State Fans - Found by HaileyOctober 03, 2009Commentary: Nittany Lions a total class act On a chilly, rainy night in Happy Valley, the warmest hearts were those of Iowa’s defeated hosts. I was lucky enough to be one the soggy, gold-clad Iowa fans who witnessed the exodus of the “White House” on Sept. 26. As the predominant chant in Beaver Stadium transitioned from “We Are … Penn State” to “We Own … Penn State,” I couldn’t help but direct my jeers at a man who was probably the poorest sport in Happy Valley. In retrospect, I couldn’t be more ashamed. My brother and I sat on the border of Iowa’s designated cheering section and, consequently, had the pleasure of meeting who I surmised was the saddest representation of an otherwise stellar fan base in State College, Pa. This white-wearing Nittany Lion fan spent more time in the first half taunting the Iowa faithful around him than he did watching the game. But he was nowhere to be found as my man Adam Robinson scampered into the end zone with 8:32 to play, putting Iowa ahead by a touchdown. That idiot’s exit was the last I saw of poor sportsmanship in Happy Valley. Although the atmosphere was rain-soaked and somber, I was treated with more respect after the game than I have anywhere outside Iowa City as a visiting fan. Whenever the Hawkeyes win in Ames, you can expect a certain four-letter word followed by a three-letter word. The same is true for fans in State College, but it’s a considerably less crude — “Good job.” I couldn’t count how many times a Penn State fan walked up to my group of Iowa fans after the game and said, “Congrats” or “the best team won.” One guy even gave us an entire box of still-hot leftover pizza. While I wasn’t sure what I did to deserve congratulations, one thing became abundantly clear — Penn State has the classiest fans in the Big Ten. It was so refreshing to see the outpouring of respect the Penn State supporters bestowed following such a crippling loss, especially in this age of college football. These days, sportsmanship and respect for opponents are somewhat rare. Look no further than Tennessee and Florida head coaches Lane Kiffin and Urban Meyer. Kiffin’s verbal jabs at Meyer’s Gators during the off-season were childish and unbecoming of a coach at any level. Last week, both coaches were reprimanded by the SEC for the unsportsmanlike comments they made following Florida’s 23-13 win over Tennessee on Sept. 19. If someone told Kiffin or Meyer to say, “Good job,” after that game and mean it, they would still be scratching their heads. Speaking of head-scratchers, what do you think suspended Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount would think of Penn State’s humility? The Ducks’ tailback was the culprit behind “the punch heard ’round the world” in Week One. Blount capped his tirade off by attempting to fight Boise State fans, and he had to be subdued by coaches, teammates, and police officers. Blount’s antics after the punch have left a black-eye on the Oregon program that will linger much longer than Hout’s sore jaw. With these and a myriad of other instances in mind, I firmly believe the Big Ten is composed of the classiest fans, coaches, and players in the country. Who is the trendsetter of the group? They are … Penn State. |
My NCAA Football Letter - Week 5October 02, 2009Week 4 recap special: The Penn State season is not over! The season is not over. It’s not as Rosey (yes, pun intended) as it was, but it certainly isn’t over. We were Big 10 co-champions in 2005 and 2008, both seasons when we lost one game. And let’s face it, as a member of the Big 10, did we really even have a chance of making it to the National Championship game? Our odds were incredibly slim, even if we went undefeated. Prior to last week, if we wanted a national championship bid, Texas would need to lose, which is highly unlikely, and Alabama, Florida, and LSU would all need to lose, and considering Florida and Bama’s biggest challenges are LSU and then each other, even if all 3 of them had 1 loss, they would still more than likely be ranked higher than us. So stop worrying about the National championship game. Let’s focus on what is still attainable, first the Rose Bowl, and if not that, then realistically the Orange Bowl, which will be going to the Big 10 runner up because even though we aren’t the best conference, we are the richest and have the most viewers. The best case scenario is that PSU wins out the season and every other Big 10 team somehow loses 2 games. If (when) we win against OSU on November 7, we may have to root for the Buckeyes against Iowa depending on how the season is and where everyone is ranked, but we can hold off on that for about a month. With MSU already losing 1 conference game, the formula for success this season, we need to root for the teams we have not played and root against the teams we have. We need to play high-ranking teams, and then see them struggle. With luck and some very fun upsets in our favor, the season could end up the same as it would have if we went undefeated; a bid to the Rose Bowl. Week 5: Everyone knows the rankings changed dramatically last week, so I am not going to bother analyzing them. One question though before the games of the week: Why the heck is College Gameday at Boston College for the Florida State Game? Games to watch: Arkansas State@(13)Iowa: Unfortunately, I do not think Arkansas State is the team to beat Iowa and it will have no effect on the Big Ten standings even if they do. I’m just curious how well Iowa will play coming off a big win and then looking ahead towards UM. Btw, get your Maize & Blue ready for next weekend’s primetime (but 2nd biggest) game. (4)LSU@(18)GA: This is gonna be a great high-action game. Both of these teams are good, and with Tennessee looking better than expected this year, this will be the first of three very difficult games for GA this month, capping off with Florida. If they expect to make anything of their season they need a win tonight. With that said, Les Miles won’t let that happen because LSU is a serious contender for the National Championship, but he needs to keep his team grounded because they play Florida next week in what may be the biggest game of the year during the regular season. Quite frankly, I want to see either LSU or Bama beat (ahem, play against) Texas instead of Florida, so not only am I predicting a win, but I’m rooting for it too. WA@ND: Even though WA lost to Standford last weekend, they are still in the running for PAC-10 champion since they beat USC and CAL lost. Also, I love a comeback story and Charlie Weis physically disgusts me. I’m fairly certain the only reason he runs out of the tunnel is they give the trainer a Twinkie and he’s afraid that Brady Quinn will have nothing to do this weekend and steal it. Now seriously, how can you be a football coach and be that out of shape? Go Huskies! (15)PSU@Illinois: This is not a cupcake people. I know that Daryl Clark is not Morelli, but I cannot shake that feeling of how sloppy we may play after a big loss, especially against a team that was embarrassed against OSU last week with a shutout. Obviously I am picking PSU, but we better get our act together. (7)USC@(24)CAL: Is this the equivalent of the PAC-10 championship game? Not even remotely. With Oregon destroying CAL last week and Washington looking freakish awesome for team that was 0-12 last season (even thought they lost to Stanford last week), I might say something that I have not considered in many seasons: the PAC-10 is going to be exciting. This may be USC’s year to give up the PAC-10 championship that they have held since 2002. Not only do they have to face CAL this weekend, but then they play Oregon next weekend. (8)OK@(17) Miami: Game 4 of 4 of the most difficult season opening. Miami needs to win this game if they want any shot of a good bowl game. Also, if Miami wins this and VT loses just one more game, which seems unlikely, Miami would probably go to the Orange Bowl. Have a great weekend! WE ARE!

My NCAA Football Letter - Week 4September 25, 2009Week 3 recap: I do not know what is more impressive. Miami going from unranked to #9 or Washington going from a 0-12 season to being ranked. USC went 0 for 10 on third down conversions. The game played like a classic Big Ten defensive struggle. Wonderful entertainment! MSU does not = Big Ten dark horse anymore. O yeah, apparently the TN coach did get to FL for the first half. Then Tebow realized who he was and once again won the game and then ran for president and won. Week 4: Where is College Gameday gonna be this weekend? That's right, the happiest of all the valleys. Booya! More on that later. Conference play, conference play, conference play, conference play! Games to watch: South Florida@(18)FSU: SF has been decimating the cupcakes and this is a huge road game for them to prove themselves. They start off the season strong, but then lose it towards the end. This is an early game and lets face it, Penn Staters love to see Bobby lose and JoePa win. (6)CAL@Oregon: Why is this game important? If PSU goes undefeated, but FL and TX also go undefeated, then PSU is going to the Rose Bowl, no discussion. The other team that goes to the Rose Bowl if the FL/TX scenario becomes true, is the winner of the PAC-10. This weekend CAL plays Oregon, which they should win. Next weekend they play USC, which will be a good game. Now here's the fun part, CAL's last conference game is against Washington. Let's say USC beats CAL but then CAL beats Washington and all of them only lose 1 conference game (assuming Washington runs the conference table until that point.) That will make for some interesting BCS decisions. All three teams have technically defeated each other by association. Neat! (9)Miami@(11)VT: Miami is on a roll and I believe they will win. Iowa@(5)PSU: The revenge game. The team that kept us from the perfect record. It's a home game. It's prime time. College Gameday is there. It's a Whiteout. The mighty Nittany Lions, the best they've ever seen! We Are! |
